A U.S.-based company, Microchip Technology, has announced a partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to utilize specialized 40-nanometer manufacturing processes at TSMC’s subsidiary in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. This collaboration aims to strengthen Microchip’s supply chain resiliency. Microchip Tech is known for manufacturing microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog, and Flash-IP integrated circuits. The partnership with TSMC will enable Microchip to better serve a wide range of customers in various markets, including automotive, industrial, and networking applications.

Rosa Castanares, senior vice president of business management at TSMC North America, emphasized TSMC’s commitment to supporting customers’ long-term growth and innovation through initiatives like the one with Microchip. TSMC recently opened its first Japanese plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, with plans for mass production to begin in the fourth quarter. Additionally, TSMC has selected the same Kumamoto town, Kikuyo, to host its second fab in Japan. Once both fabs are completed, they are expected to produce 100,000 12-inch wafers a month at full capacity, utilizing advanced technologies ranging from 40 nm to 6 nm.
