Amitral “AJ” Simon, a former University at Albany defensive lineman and 2024 NFL Draft prospect, passed away at the age of 25. The school announced his death on Wednesday without revealing the cause. Simon played a pivotal role in the Great Danes’ successful season, recording 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks as they achieved an 11-4 record and secured their first conference title.

Simon was described as a role model and exceptional teammate during his time at UAlbany, leaving a lasting impact on the football program. His dedication to both academics and athletics was commendable, showcasing his well-rounded personality and commitment to excellence in all aspects of his life. He had recently visited the New England Patriots as part of the pre-draft process.

Albany head coach Greg Gattuso expressed his sadness over Simon’s passing, highlighting their strong bond and friendship over the years. Simon had declared for the 2024 NFL Draft in December after earning first-team All-CAA honors following an impressive season. Ranked as the 448th prospect by ESPN, Simon had a promising future ahead of him before his untimely death.
