The new second-generation biofuels plant in Palos de la Frontera, Spain will soon be operational thanks to an agreement between Topsoe and Cepsa. Elena Scaltritti, Topsoe’s chief commercial officer, is thrilled about being chosen as the technology provider for this important project, which she believes will set a benchmark for green molecules in Europe.

The facility, which began construction in February 2024, will have the capacity to produce 500,000 tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel annually. This new plant will allow Cepsa and Bio-Oils to double their renewable fuels production capacity to 1 million tons per year.

José Manuel Martínez, Cepsa’s director of technology, projects, and services, is excited about the new plant’s commitment to reducing emissions. The facility is expected to emit 75% less CO2 than a traditional biofuel plant and achieve net-zero emissions in the medium term. Martínez praised Topsoe as a reliable partner with a strong track record of delivering on their promises and expressed enthusiasm for increasing production of this crucial renewable fuel.

By working together, Topsoe and Cepsa are poised to make a significant impact on the renewable energy landscape in Europe. The growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel underscores the critical role that renewable fuels will play in supporting the energy transition.
