The Dutch village of Akersloot, located in the province of North Holland, is baffled by a mystery. A massive wooden sculpture, named Contemplatorium, measuring 17 meters in length and weighing over 500 kilos, has vanished without a trace. This three-part work of art had been on display in a field in the Hoorne recreational area since March end.
The sudden disappearance of the artwork has sparked many questions. It’s difficult to move something that large and heavy without being noticed. Artist Rob Sweere told Dutch RTL News that it would require several people and equipment like a crane or tractor to transport the parts. Yet, no one reported seeing anything unusual during the night when it disappeared. Even the stakes in the ground and information sign post were removed with care, leaving behind no clues.
Despite police awareness of the incident, they have yet to make any progress in their investigation after two weeks. Social media reactions are mixed; some are saddened by the loss of the artwork while others find it an unnecessary fuss over something scheduled to be moved again in November. Various theories are being considered by authorities, including an arson attack involving young people near the artwork on the night it disappeared although no evidence was found to support this claim.
