The US and China have recently agreed to extend their bilateral deal that outlines their cooperation in science and technology. This agreement, first established in 1979, has been renewed every five years, with the exception of 2023 when a six-month extension was approved. However, the latest extension, which only lasts for six months beginning in February 2024, suggests that the cooperative relationship between the two countries may be diminishing as competition grows more intense.

The US and China are each other’s largest research partners due to their long-standing collaboration in science and technology. However, tensions between the two nations as they compete for technological dominance are on the rise. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, this competition could potentially jeopardize any further extensions to their cooperative deal.

Despite their differences, the US and China have maintained a collaborative relationship in science and technology for decades. This cooperation has led to groundbreaking discoveries and advancements in various fields. However, as both nations continue to compete for global supremacy, it remains unclear whether this agreement will be renewed beyond its current six-month extension.
