The U.S.-Mexico joint bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup has been withdrawn, leaving many stunned as it was widely expected to win due to its potential for FIFA to generate significant profits. Despite having American sponsors prepared to invest in hosting the 2026 men’s World Cup, the 2027 women’s World Cup, and the 2028 Olympics consecutively, the bid lacked strong support both publicly and behind the scenes, with cities unsure of what was involved. Additionally, the bid presentation recycled host city information from the 2026 men’s World Cup, indicating a lack of preparation.

Moving forward, it is possible that the U.S.-Mexico bid could be a favorite for the 2031 Women’s World Cup, competing against other possible bids from Spain, Britain, China, South Africa and Germany-Dutch-Belgium effort. The decision to withdraw from hosting in 2027 may have been influenced by other upcoming events such as Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics and North America already set to host the 2026 men’s World Cup.

With Mexico and United States no longer contenders for next year tournament only two bids remain: a favored bid from Brazil and a joint bid from Belgium-Germany-Netherlands. Brazil has never hosted this tournament before making them a strong contender as it takes place in South America for the first time ever. The final decision on who will host the tournament will be made by FIFA on May 17th with potential continental block voting influencing outcome.
