In the summer of 1994, the city of Oakville was hit by an unusual phenomenon where thick spheres fell like rain, leading scientists to analyze the mysterious substance. On August 7, 1994, slime rain appeared for the first time in Oakville as mucus particles smaller than a grain of rice. The mucus rain continued to fall on August 19, sparking various theories to explain its origin.

One theory suggested that the mucus could be waste from airplane toilets, but this was refuted by the US Federal Aviation Administration. Another more intriguing theory proposed that the mucus was the result of exploding jellyfish, possibly caused by bombs dropped into the Pacific Ocean by the 354th Fighter Squadron off the coast of Washington. However, a mucus analysis conducted by the Washington State Department of Ecology revealed that the mucus contained cells without a nucleus, refuting the jellyfish theory.

The presence of bacteria in the mucus raised concerns among Oakville residents and some fell ill with flu-like symptoms after being exposed to it. Despite scientific analysis and speculation, researchers were unable to determine exactly what caused this strange event. Residents like Sunny Barclift who experienced vomiting and fatigue after touching it still believe it to be an unexplained and unusual phenomenon that continues to puzzle them today.

The events of that summer remain a mystery and are still being studied by researchers in hopes of finding out what caused this bizarre incident in Oakville’s history.
