Business owners in the Cooper Young area of Midtown are on high alert after a series of recent burglaries in the area. Ounce of Hope is the latest business to fall victim to these crimes, with nearly $6,000 worth of merchandise stolen during the break-in. This incident marks the third time in the past year that the store has been broken into, causing frustration among the staff.
Assistant manager Charlotte Campbell expressed her dismay over the situation, stating that the store has faced challenges such as being dropped by an insurance company and increased rates as a result of these repeated burglaries. Despite these setbacks, the store does not pass on these costs to customers, further straining their financial situation.
According to data from the Memphis Data Hub, there have been 42 reports of burglaries and robberies of businesses within a half-mile radius of Ounce of Hope in the last year. The most recent incident involved two men breaking into Aldo’s Pizza, stealing over $1,000 worth of food and alcohol. Surveillance cameras at Ounce of Hope captured a clear photo of one of the thieves, though it is unclear if they are connected to the Aldo’s Pizza burglary.
