Lori and George Schappell, the world’s oldest conjoined twins and Berks County natives, have passed away. Their deaths were confirmed by Leibensperger Funeral Homes in Leesport on April 7. The cause of death was not disclosed, and the twins were 62 years old at the time of their passing.

The twins were born on September 18, 1961, to Franklin and Ruth Schappell of Perry Township. Despite having partially fused skulls, which is one of the rarest forms of conjoined twinning and accounts for only 2% to 6% of cases, they lived as independently as possible throughout their lives. They had their own residence since the age of 24 and enjoyed traveling extensively.

Dori, formerly known as George, came out as transgender in 2007 and started identifying as George. George was a talented country music singer who performed across the U.S., while Lori excelled as a trophy-winning bowler and worked in the Reading Hospital laundry for several years. Their commitment to living their lives on their terms left a lasting impact on those who knew them.

Throughout their lives, Lori and George received significant public attention, appearing on various documentaries, talk shows, and even a television show episode of “Nip/Tuck.” Their unique situation made them stand out from others but also allowed them to pursue their passions despite any obstacles they may have faced.

In conclusion, Lori and George’s legacy will live on through those they touched with their unwavering determination to live life on their terms. Their story serves as an inspiration to us all that we can overcome any obstacle with hard work and dedication.
