As the demand for youth sports continues to grow, families are being pushed into year-round training and expensive travel leagues at a younger age. This trend is not only costly for families but can also take a toll on children themselves. Today on On Point, we will be discussing the high cost of the youth sports arms race with a panel of experts.

Our guests include Jennifer Howell, a former soccer player, and Tom Farrey, the executive director of the Aspen Institute’s Sports and Society Program. Farrey is also the founder of Project Play and author of “Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of Our Children.” We will also be hearing from Oluwatoyosi Owoeye, the director of the Translational Sports Injury Prevention Lab at St. Louis University, and John DiFiori, the chief of primary sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery and NBA director of Sports Medicine.

Linda Flanagan, author of “Take Back the Game: How Money and Mania are ruining Kids’ Sports—and Why It Matters,” will also be featured on the program. Tune in on April 12, 2024, for this important discussion on the impact of high costs on youth sports. Audio of
