Tampa Bay Airfest drew a large crowd over the weekend, with organizers estimating that over 150,000 people would attend the event. The Airfest is a tradition at MacDill Air Force Base that has been held for 80 years and is considered a significant milestone for both the organizers and attendees.

During Saturday’s opening ceremony, four World War II veterans were honored for their service. These veterans shared their stories and experiences with the audience, emphasizing the importance of education, training, leadership, and valor in their success. Among them was Daniel Keel, a Tuskegee Airman who defied the odds and rose through the ranks despite facing discrimination and obstacles.

Keel and his fellow veterans emphasized the importance of passing on their wisdom to younger generations attending the Airfest. They reflected on the valuable lessons they learned during their service and hoped to inspire future generations to continue fighting for justice and equality. As Keel put it, “They’re our future. Let me tell you, they are bright. I think looking forward we’re going to be in good hands.”

In addition to honoring the veterans, Toni Schuck, a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper recognized for her heroic actions during the Skyway 10K in 2022, was acknowledged as a community hero at the Airfest.
