In Seoul, South Korea, Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a speech at the Summit for Democracy, emphasizing the transformative impact of new tools such as biotechnology and artificial intelligence on every country, irrespective of their government type, geography, size or power. He urged democracies to shape this transformation to maximize its benefits while minimizing its risks and upholding core values.

Blinken highlighted the steps the United States is taking to meet this challenge, including using technology to strengthen democracies by promoting health, prosperity and inclusivity. The country is investing in infrastructure to ensure that everyone has access to digital tools such as high-speed internet with a focus on bridging the digital divide in various communities. Additionally, the U.S is collaborating with partners globally to establish rules and norms for technology use that align with democratic values.

The Secretary pointed out that some countries are using technology to restrict freedoms, control information and spread misinformation. He underscored the need to defend against these threats and work together with allies and partners who share democratic values to overcome these challenges and build coalitions for a shared technological future based on democracy.
