In a concerning development for Florida, climate researchers are warning about the increasing threat of sea level rise, tidal flooding, and extreme rain. A recent report from Virginia Tech predicts that over half a million people in the U.S. could be impacted by sea level rise by 2050, with the Jacksonville area being at high risk. Miami is already experiencing some of the most extreme effects of sea level rise, giving a grim picture of what other parts of the state could face in the near future.

As part of our special series Solutionaries, we are exploring the efforts being made in South Florida to address the growing problem of sea level rise. By examining the work being done by experts and leaders in the region, we hope to shed light on ways in which communities can work together to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect their residents from the threat of rising sea levels. One such effort is being led by scientists at Florida International University’s Sea Level Solutions Lab and leaders in Broward County who are working on potential solutions to combat the rising tide for a better future.
