On Monday, the South Aiken boys’ tennis team faced a tough test in the postseason as they played against their third-round playoff opponent, Greenwood. Despite missing their senior and No. 1 singles player, Rowan Degnan, due to a DECA trip, the team showed resilience and determination. The absence of Degnan forced players to compete in unfamiliar positions and on different courts.

Despite this challenge, head coach Dee Dee Redd was impressed by their performance in the face of adversity. She noted that the team was more competitive than expected, given the circumstances. The T-Breds managed to claim two points in the matchup, showcasing their growth and potential for future success. With Degnan absent, every player moved up a spot in the lineup, creating new matchups and opportunities for the team. This fresh perspective allowed players to approach each match without predefined expectations.

The T-Breds rallied to win the final two points after Greenwood clinched the first four points of the match. Eighth-graders David Baker and Coda Hughes played crucial roles in securing victories for the team. Hughes won a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles while Baker persevered through a tough battle at No. 1 singles, winning his match over two hours long which highlights his determination and resilience on court.

Baker’s victory was fueled by dedication and support from his teammates who were impressed by his persistence in facing challenges throughout
