On Wednesday, Switzerland made the decision not to officially join the group of countries formed by the USA to implement Russia sanctions. The majority of the National Council does not want Switzerland to be counted as part of the US camp, despite belonging to the West.

Throughout its history, Switzerland has remained neutral in international affairs and has done so successfully during the Cold War and beyond. However, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, pressure has increased on Switzerland to take sides. While Switzerland has adopted EU sanctions against Russia to align itself with the West, it also wants to maintain a degree of independence in its international positioning.

The debate around Swiss participation in an international “Repo” working group highlights this tension. Although the USA desires Swiss membership in the repo group, Switzerland is hesitant due to concerns about losing its neutral status and independence on the global stage. Supporters argue that joining the repo group would increase implementation of sanctions against Russia and provide Switzerland with a say in decision-making. Critics fear that Swiss membership could compromise its independence and force it to adopt sanctions it does not support. The potential consequences of joining the repo group, such as being subjected to cross-border controls by other member countries, raise valid concerns among skeptics.

Despite technical exchanges with repo member states, there are currently no clear benefits to official membership. With no recent foreign pressure for membership and a commitment to maintaining neutrality and independence in international affairs, Switzerland decided not to join the repo group.

In conclusion, Switzerland’s decision reflects its long-standing commitment to neutrality and independence in international affairs while still taking steps necessary for economic sanctions implementation against Russia.
