In April, electricity bills in households in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi increased by 20-50% compared to March, with some households experiencing a double increase from the previous months. This was due to the hot weather that caused a surge in demand for cooling equipment, leading to higher electricity usage.

One such household is that of Mr. Nhat in Nha Be district of HCMC. He was shocked when his electricity bill in April nearly doubled the average of previous months and increased 30% compared to March. Despite turning on their air conditioners only in the evening, many households experienced a significant increase in their electricity bills.

Similarly, Mr. Cao in Go Vap also saw a sharp increase in his electricity bill despite maintaining the temperature in his house above 26-28 degrees Celsius as recommended. The high bills were attributed to the increased demand for electricity due to the heat wave, as well as the stepped electricity tariff system in place.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority reported that electricity consumption in April set new records, with consumption nearly reaching 1 billion kWh. The prolonged hot weather in the South contributed to the surge in electricity usage and higher bills for consumers.

Many consumers have expressed frustration with the current pricing structure and called for reforms. Experts have pointed out that the progressive pricing system has its disadvantages and proposed alternative methods of calculating electricity bills. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is considering changing from a 6-step tariff to a 5-step tariff to address some of these issues raised by consumers.

In light of rising energy prices and ongoing heatwaves, consumers are urged to save energy by using air conditioners efficiently, choosing energy-efficient models, and regularly maintaining appliances. The government and industry stakeholders are working on solutions to address consumer concerns and ensure fair pricing practices in the electricity sector.

Overall, it is important for consumers to be aware of their energy usage habits and take steps towards more sustainable living practices while also advocating for fairer pricing structures that reflect actual costs associated with producing and distributing power sources.
