The World Nature Photography Awards has announced the winners of its 2024 competition, with Tracey Lund from the UK taking first prize for her photograph of two gannets fighting for a fish in the waters near Scotland’s Shetland Islands. Lund captured this breathtaking image from a boat using a DSLR camera in waterproof housing while on holiday.

The awards featured several categories, including animal portraits, plants and fungi, and invertebrate, amphibian, and reptile behavior. In the Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments category, Ivan Pedretti of Italy won with a magical photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland.

Pedretti was impressed by the contrast of colors in the landscape and shared his appreciation for it, saying: “I love the contrast in colors between the white mountains and the black dunes with yellow grass.” The World Nature Photography Awards is dedicated to promoting photography as a way to contribute to environmental causes by planting a tree for each entry into the competition. As Adrian Dinsdale, co-founder of WNPA notes: “Our winners never fail to take our breath away with their stunning images. As always, it’s such a joy to see the amazing caliber of entries into the awards.”
