On April 26, we celebrate National South Dakota Day and what better way to do so than by highlighting a local business that is perfect for a fun family outing. The 1880 Train in Hill City is an excellent choice, offering steam locomotive rides that have been operating since 1957. We had the opportunity to speak with Nate Anderson, one of the operators, to learn more about what the business has in store for this summer.

According to Anderson, the 1880 Train aims to provide an authentic steam excursion ride that will transport passengers back in time while also teaching them about the history of the Black Hills. The train’s typical route offers a one-hour leg between Hill City and Keystone, allowing passengers to explore both towns in style.

The 1880 Train also hosts themed events throughout the summer, including the popular old west shootout held every Sunday night in June and July. Passengers can enjoy a performance by cowboys while sitting on an old-fashioned mode of transportation. As fall approaches, the train shifts its focus to events like the Wine Express, which partners with local wineries to offer onboard refreshments and snacks ideal for a date night or social gathering.

If you’re looking for a unique family outing or a special date night experience, look no further than the 1880 Train. For more information on their schedule and to book your ride starting on May 11, visit their website today!
