In Shasta County, as the temperatures start to rise, it is crucial to be prepared for the potential dangers that come with the heat. Today is Heatstroke Prevention Day, and it is a great opportunity to learn ways to stay safe in the warm weather. Christopher Diamond, a Community Education Specialist with the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency, shared some tips on how to avoid heat-related illnesses.

One of the key ways to prevent heat-related illness is to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. It’s also important to stay indoors during hot weather and wear light and loose-fitting clothing. Seeking shade when outside can also help lower the risk of heatstroke. Another important thing to remember is not to leave children or pets inside a closed car, as temperatures can rise rapidly in a confined space.

Scheduling outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day and moving outdoor pets indoors can also help lower the risk of heatstroke. Recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke, such as high body temperature, dizziness, confusion, and nausea, is important. If someone shows signs of heatstroke, it is a medical emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.

Diamond emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, such as the elderly, individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions
