The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD) has issued a warning to residents to stay away from beaches following rainfall this weekend. Stormwater runoff can lead to health risks such as diarrhea, fevers, and other illnesses, making it unsafe for swimmers and surfers to come into contact with the water. It is also advised to stay away from the water for three days after rainfall to reduce the risk of exposure to bacteria and pollutants.

In addition to health risks, large debris like logs may wash up in the ocean, posing an increased risk of injury to those entering the beach waters. The SBCPHD also recommends avoiding areas where runoff can carry harmful materials. Harvesting shellfish should be prohibited for 10 days after rainfall due to the potential presence of bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and metals within them. While cooking shellfish may help kill bacteria, it may not remove other contaminants.
