On Thursday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued new provisional measures against Israel after South Africa presented a second request to the court on March 6 regarding the famine situation in the Gaza Strip. The court has instructed Israel to adopt all necessary and effective measures, in coordination with the United Nations, to ensure the unhindered and large-scale supply of humanitarian aid to the Gaza population.
In late December, South Africa filed a complaint against Israel with the ICJ for alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip. The complaint was in response to a bloody military offensive that resulted in over 32,500 deaths. The ICJ’s decision and subsequent implementation of provisional measures are seen as crucial steps towards addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and holding Israel accountable.
The South African Government has celebrated the decision and emphasized its importance in ensuring that Palestinians in Gaza are safe from further harm. They believe that new strategies are needed to address changing circumstances and have called for compliance with the court’s directives to end military operations in Gaza and ensure the sanctity of humanity.
