As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) continues to rise, companies are facing a growing shortage of data to train their models. To address this issue, some AI companies are turning to human workers to create training content. Previously, gig workers were used for simple tasks like data annotation and labeling. However, as technology advances, more advanced individuals are needed to train AI models.

One such company is Scale AI, which is now hiring part-time workers with graduate degrees to write essays and prompts for its AI bots. The company seeks individuals with Master’s degrees or PhDs who are fluent in English, Hindi, or Japanese and have professional writing experience in fields like poetry, journalism, and publishing. Their goal is to enhance the writing abilities of AI bots by providing them with high-quality human-created content. Scale AI relies on a large number of contractors, particularly in North America, to carry out this work.

According to Willow Primack, the vice president of data operations at Scale AI, the human touch is essential for the AI to be truly useful to users. As tech giants struggle to find new data to train their systems, they are turning to more sophisticated gig trainers like Scale AI. The rapid learning pace of AI models means there is a shortage of resources for them to learn from. The abundance of online information is decreasing rapidly as well as Epoch has warned that AI could run out of data by 2026 if new resources are not found quickly enough.

To ensure their systems continue learning indefinitely, companies are exploring creative solutions such as using customer data from Google Docs Sheets and Slides or purchasing publishing company Simon & Schuster’s book collection for accessing new data sources.
