Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called for the need to build bridges of dialogue and peace to end the cycle of violence and oppression that continues to plague Europe. He emphasized this point during a recent speech, where he commemorated the long battle of Cassino, which was destroyed on March 15, 1944, following an Allied bombing of the abbey.

Mattarella’s words are particularly poignant in light of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which continue to escalate tensions along European borders. The President acknowledged the sacrifices made by many during World War II, as well as the mistakes that cost lives on all sides.

However, Mattarella did not advocate for uncritical pacifism. Instead, he stressed the importance of repudiation war as a means of resolving international disputes. He highlighted devastating examples of war’s inhumanity in Coventry, Dresden and current situations in Ukraine and Gaza.

Mattarella paid homage to the victims and urged for an end to violence and oppression. He underscored Italy’s commitment to peace, solidarity and respect for all peoples as enshrined in its Constitution. In a world marred by conflicts and tensions, Mattarella’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding dignity, freedom and dialogue. He urged EU leaders to play a crucial role in building lasting peace based on these values.
