A recent study by the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that Salmonella is the leading cause of diarrhea globally, including in many large-scale poisoning cases. The bacteria enters the human body through food and drink, producing toxins that damage the intestinal mucosa, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. If not rehydrated promptly, patients can become dehydrated, have low blood pressure, hypotension, multi-organ failure, and even death.

A 14-year-old child who was poisoned after eating Bang bread in Dong Nai has tested positive for Salmonella bacteria. On May 6th, a representative from Children’s Hospital 2 announced the results. The boy was admitted to the hospital with fever and green liquid diarrhea four days ago. According to family members, he ate bread purchased at a Bang store in Long Khanh city on April 30th. The doctor diagnosed a bacterial intestinal infection and prescribed antibiotics and supportive medications. Currently, the baby’s symptoms have improved.

Salmonella grows quickly in hot and humid environments and can spread into the environment through improper cleaning of livestock slaughterhouses or contaminated foods like meat or poultry eggs. Eating raw or undercooked eggs can also lead to Salmonella infection. Vegetables are also susceptible to Salmonella spread from animal feces. Recently, blood tests of three critically ill children treated in Dong Nai showed they were infected with Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, which often appears in fresh products like beef or pork meatballs and cheese curds. Compared to E. coli poisoning caused by Salmonella has more severe and dangerous symptoms such as sepsis or kidney failure due to an overload of bacteria into the bloodstream which can lead to life-threatening situations if not treated promptly.

The number of people poisoned after eating bread in Long Khanh City has increased to 560 as of today.
