Passengers traveling through Belfast International Airport will soon be able to keep liquids and electricals in their carry-on bags as they pass through security, thanks to new technology provided by Smiths Detection. This innovative solution is said to be “industry-leading” and will significantly enhance the passenger experience at the airport.

The announcement is part of a larger investment by VINCI Airports, the airport’s owner, aimed at improving operational efficiency, passenger experience, and environmental performance. Nabeel Gill, Head of Security at Belfast International Airport, explained that the airport plays a crucial role in aviation, tourism, and the local economy. By continuously developing security standards and increasing operational efficiency, the airport aims to provide a safe and efficient experience for passengers.

In December 2022, the UK government introduced new legislation that will allow passengers at most major UK airports to carry liquids in containers up to two liters starting from June 2024. Travellers will no longer need to carry liquids in clear plastic bags or remove tablets and laptops from hand luggage at security checkpoints. Major airports will be required to install new technology that provides security staff with more detailed images of the contents of passengers’ bags to comply with these new regulations.

Overall, this investment by VINCI Airports is expected to greatly benefit both travelers and the local economy by improving operational efficiency while enhancing the overall passenger experience.
