Steward Health Care System filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2024, prompting Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) to express deep concern for the patients and workers affected by this situation. She criticized the for-profit healthcare system in America and emphasized the importance of keeping Steward hospitals open and accessible for those in need, particularly vulnerable patients in Massachusetts. Pressley commended the Healey-Driscoll Administration for their efforts in ensuring an orderly transfer of ownership that prioritizes the well-being of patients and providers.

In response to Steward’s financial struggles, Rep. Pressley, along with Sen. Warren and the Massachusetts congressional delegation, called on Steward to provide information on their financial position, the status of their facilities in Massachusetts, and their plans to avoid abandoning the communities they serve. This was part of ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing Steward hospitals and ensure continued access to medical care for residents in eastern Massachusetts.

Following this call, Rep. Pressley sought answers from Cerebrus, a private equity firm involved with Steward, regarding their role in contributing to the financial difficulties faced by Steward hospitals. By holding Steward executives accountable for their decisions, Pressley aimed to protect the lives and well-being of individuals in the Massachusetts 7th district and beyond.
