On Sunday, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced the passing of Cesar Luis Menotti, a legendary coach who guided Argentina to victory in the 1978 World Cup. Menotti had a successful playing career with clubs such as Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, and Santos before transitioning to coaching.

After winning the Argentine championship with Huracan in 1973, Menotti took over as the head coach of the national team. Under his guidance, Argentina went on to win the World Cup in 1978, marking a historic moment for the country.

Following his success with the national team, Menotti had coaching stints with various clubs around the world. He won the Copa Del Rey with Barcelona in 1983 and coached Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Independiente, River Plate, Penarol, Rosario Central, Sampdoria and Mexican sides Puebla and Tecos among many others.

The AFA expressed its sadness at Menotti’s passing but also acknowledged his contributions to Argentine football as both a player and a coach. His legacy will be remembered fondly by fans and players alike. Farewell Flaco querido!
