On Monday, people throughout the United States were able to witness a rare solar eclipse. The event was visible in many parts of the country and notable figures in the sports world, such as NFL star Patrick Mahomes and NBA stars Jalen Brunson and Trae Young, took in the spectacle. In order to safely view the eclipse, people were reminded to use special glasses.

Total solar eclipses are infrequent occurrences, occurring even less frequently than total eclipses of the heart experienced at karaoke nights. The last total solar eclipse happened in 2021 and was visible only in Antarctica. The last one visible in North America occurred in 2017. Going back further, the last solar eclipse visible in the United States was in 1979. The next one that Americans can see without traveling to specific regions like the Arctic, Greenland, Spain or Iceland will be in 2044.
