Vaccination is crucial for preventing rabies, a disease with a high mortality rate. Despite widespread awareness, many deaths still occur due to lack of vaccination after being bitten or scratched by animals. In the first three months of 2024, 27 deaths from rabies were reported in Vietnam, highlighting the urgency of vaccination.

To ensure prompt and effective vaccination, Dr. Bui Thanh Phong outlined seven key points regarding rabies vaccination. Firstly, it is essential to receive the vaccine early after an animal bite to produce specific antibodies that prevent the rabies virus from reaching the nervous system. Secondly, vaccination should be accompanied by anti-rabies serum for enhanced effectiveness.

Thirdly, even if the animal appears healthy after a bite, vaccination is still necessary as the virus can have a long incubation period before symptoms manifest. Fourthly, people who are vaccinated against rabies do not need to abstain from sexual activity during the vaccination period.

Fifthly, it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities and substances that may reduce the efficacy of the vaccine during the vaccination period. Sixthly, a single shot of the vaccine is insufficient to provide long-term immunity; therefore, it requires a full regimen prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Seventhly, pregnant women can safely receive the rabies vaccine without altering their vaccination schedule. There is no evidence of fetal abnormalities due to vaccination, making it a crucial preventive measure for expectant mothers.

The cost of rabies vaccines varies depending on facilities and types of vaccine ranging from 250 thousand VND to 500 thousand VND per dose. Accessible facilities such as hospitals, health centers and clinics are essential for receiving timely and effective prevention against this deadly disease.

In conclusion, understanding the importance of rabies vaccinations and following medical advice can help individuals protect themselves and their communities from this deadly disease.
