Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has announced that veteran pitcher Jose Quintana will be the Opening Day starter against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 28 at Citi Field. Mendoza praised Quintana for his experience, competitiveness, and ability to bounce back, indicating that the team is confident in his ability to lead the rotation.

Quintana’s selection as the Opening Day starter was solidified due to an injury to another pitcher, Kodai Senga. Despite his injury setbacks, Quintana put up solid numbers in his limited starts for the Mets last season, boasting a 3.57 ERA.

Mendoza expressed his excitement about giving Quintana the Opening Day nod, highlighting their history together in the minor leagues. Quintana, who missed part of the previous season with a rib injury that required surgery, is looking forward to the opportunity to make his debut as a Mets Opening Day starter.

The 35-year-old left-hander will be the first southpaw to start on Opening Day for the Mets since 2013. With prior experience as an Opening Day starter for the Chicago White Sox in 2017, Quintana is excited about the chance to step into that role once again for the Mets.
