Nantucket’s economy and community are at a crossroads, and the future of our island is hanging in the balance. As a concerned resident deeply invested in the well-being of our community, I urge all residents to join me in voting YES on Article 59 at the upcoming Town Meeting on May 7.

The passage of Article 59 is critical in protecting the cornerstone of our island’s economy and the financial stability of our residents. Tourism has been a vital lifeline for Nantucket for nearly two centuries, sustaining us through times of economic change. It is imperative that we come together in unwavering support of this initiative to ensure the continued prosperity of our island for future generations.

Short-term rentals play a crucial role in preserving the essence of our community, as I have seen firsthand through my own experiences owning multiple short-term rentals and an architectural firm on the island. For many like myself, short-term renting is not just a financial necessity but a lifeline that helps us maintain properties we wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.

It is important to recognize the significant impact that short-term rental visitors have on our local businesses, workforce, and community cohesion. They not only support our boutiques and eateries but also sustain island-based contractors and service providers, contributing to the economic well-being of our residents. However, the threat posed by those seeking to restrict property owner rights is grave. We cannot allow the interests of a privileged few to jeopardize the livelihoods of many families and the very essence of our community.
