Scammers are always on the lookout for vulnerable targets, and small businesses often fall prey to their schemes. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging business owners to be vigilant against email scams, especially during the busy end-of-year budgeting season. In a story shared by Vice President of Communications and Public Relations at the BBB, Josh Planos, a Kansas City business fell victim to a scam involving a fake invoice from a government agency for IT work that had been outsourced.

To avoid falling for such scams, small business owners should be proactive when signing up with new vendors. Planos recommends asking pertinent questions about the terms and conditions, frequency of payments, and identifying a point of contact within the vendor company to address any concerns. By being cautious and verifying the legitimacy of invoices received, small businesses can protect themselves from falling victim to scams like the one mentioned above.
