Prostate Enlargement Treatment in Vietnam: A Growing Option for European Patients

In recent years, Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi has become an increasingly popular destination for European patients seeking treatment for prostate enlargement with embolization. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hien, Director of the Center for Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology, shared that the number of European patients treated at the hospital has steadily risen, with more than 10 patients receiving care in 2023 compared to none before 2021. Patients from countries with advanced medical systems such as Switzerland, England, Germany, Australia, and Canada have traveled to Vietnam for this treatment option.

One of the reasons behind this growing trend is the cost-effectiveness of embolization treatment in Vietnam while maintaining high-quality expertise and medical care. Additionally, many overseas Vietnamese patients prefer to return home for medical treatment to have their relatives take care of them and avoid language barriers. Many patients who have tried different methods like medication and surgery abroad without success have found success with embolization in Vietnam.

Embolization is a minimally invasive intervention method used to treat various diseases, including prostate enlargement. It involves blocking the blood vessels that feed the tumor, causing it to shrink in size. Unlike surgery, patients undergoing embolization do not require anesthesia, experience minimal blood loss, and usually stay in the hospital for 1-2 days. Many patients choose this method for its effectiveness in reducing symptoms, preserving physiological functions, and improving quality of life.

Two cases of European patients who underwent successful embolization procedures at Tam Anh General Hospital are Mr. Lukas Brandt from Switzerland and Mr. Baltasar Meyer from Germany. Both patients experienced improvement in their symptoms after the procedure such as reduced urinary retention and improved physiological functions. Associate Professor Hien and his colleagues have performed over 2000 prostatic artery embolization cases making Vietnam one of the leading countries deploying this technique in Asia.

The success and effectiveness of embolization treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital have also attracted doctors from other countries like Hong Kong
