Pope Francis withdrew from a Good Friday service at the last minute due to health concerns, as stated by the Vatican. This decision was made in order to maintain the pontiff’s health in preparation for significant Easter events during the weekend. Last year, Pope Francis underwent abdominal surgery which has led to close monitoring of his well-being.
In recent weeks, the 87-year-old pontiff has had to have his speeches read out by aides as he battles with bronchitis, cold, and flu symptoms. There have also been instances where he had to undergo hospital tests. Prior to the Stations of the Cross service that was scheduled to take place at Rome’s Colosseum on Friday, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis would participate remotely from his residence instead of attending in person.
Earlier that day, Pope Francis had presided over the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord at St. Peter’s Basilica. During his meditations this year, which marked different stages of Jesus Christ’s suffering and death, Pope Francis addresses topics like war, online hatred, and the exploitation of women. He emphasizes the negative impact of hasty judgments, gossip, and offensive language online while acknowledging the dignity of women who have shown faithfulness and support. Through his meditations, he urges people to stand up against online hate, war and mistreatment of women while emphasizing compassion and respect for all individuals.
