Gardeners in Northern Colorado face a set of unique challenges that can make growing a backyard garden difficult. The region’s dry climate, short growing season, and frequent wind and hail events all make it tough to grow certain crops. However, researchers at Colorado State University have been working tirelessly to help gardeners overcome these obstacles.

Rae Solomon, KUNC’s rural and small communities reporter, recently spoke with the researchers to learn more about their findings. In preparation for early spring garden planting, Solomon sat down with Erin O’Toole from In The NoCo to discuss the best tomatoes and peppers to grow in Northern Colorado. The researchers shared valuable information on which crop varieties are best suited for the region based on their research.

For those interested in learning more about the results of the Larimer County in-ground tomato trials and container varieties, they can be found on the Colorado State University website. Additionally, information on the sweet pepper trials conducted by the researchers is also available for those looking to optimize their gardening efforts in Northern Colorado.
