This week’s Maps Credit Union High School Athlete of the Week nominees include Jackie Bier from North Salem, Avery Meier from West Salem, Hadley Hughes from Willamina, Mihaly Akpamgbo from West Salem, and Nelida Dalgas from North Salem.

Mihaly Akpamgbo, a senior from West Salem and the defending 6A state champion at 200 meters, had an impressive performance at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field in Eugene over the weekend. He improved his time in the same event when he placed second with a time of 21.53 seconds. Additionally, he ran a 100 meter time of 10.77 during prelims and chose not to run in the final later in the day.

Jackie Bier of North Salem had a standout performance at a dual meet at McNary where she won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.95 seconds, which is currently the fastest time in the state this season. She also anchored North’s 4×100 relay team, finishing in 51.86 seconds at the Oregon Relays.

Nelida Dalgas, a sophomore from North Salem, achieved her personal best when she finished seventh in the 2-mile race at the Oregon Relays with a time of 10 minutes and 44 seconds. During that race, she achieved a remarkable split of 3:36 for her final mile lap on her own track before joining back up with her teammates to finish off their race together as one unit – that’s truly inspiring!
