The Winthrop Department of Public Health, under the leadership of Health Director Meredith Hurley, has announced the launch of a survey to gauge the impact of the opioid epidemic on the community. This initiative is funded by Opioid Mitigation Funds provided by the state government. The primary goal of the survey is to collect data on opioid usage within the community, including details on frequency, types of opioids used, and reasons behind consumption.

Through analyzing patterns and trends in opioid use, the department aims to identify demographic differences, geographical variations, and potential correlations with other social or health factors. This information will help in allocating public resources more effectively to combat the opioid epidemic. Additionally, the survey aims to evaluate the physical, psychological, and socio-economic effects of opioid use on individuals, families, and the community at large.

The survey results will be critical in assessing available support services, treatment options, and harm reduction strategies for those dealing with opioid use disorders. Director Hurley emphasizes that using these insights will enable them to develop targeted interventions, prevention strategies, and policy initiatives to address the opioid crisis. Moreover, raising awareness about prevalence and consequences of opioid use will facilitate advocacy efforts within the community.
