Valerie Huhn, Director of the Missouri Department of Mental Health and Margie Vandeven, State Education Commissioner will be presenting to the Missouri Board of Education on Tuesday about the mental health of children in the state. Recent data from the Missouri Department of Mental Health reveals that almost one-third of teenagers report using social media almost constantly, which is double the figure from 2015. Additionally, young adults show the highest rates of social isolation, with almost twice as many reporting feelings of loneliness compared to those over 65.

In light of these findings, the Missouri Department of Mental Health is preparing recommendations for the government to address the mental health needs of children. Some proposed recommendations include establishing tech-free zones and promoting in-person friendships among children, setting an example of responsible social media usage, enhancing school-based mental health programs and increasing investments in hiring school counselors and social workers.
