Nvidia and Amazon have announced a significant financial commitment to support a partnership between the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and the University of Washington in the United States. The collaboration, worth $110 million, will have as its main focus different aspects of artificial intelligence, opening new research perspectives in key sectors such as robotics, healthcare, climate change, and atmospheric sciences.

The two technology companies will each contribute $25 million to fund the universities’ AI research. Nvidia highlighted that this support comes at a critical time when universities around the world are preparing to address critical AI skills by offering access to the high-performance computing capabilities of supercomputers.

The company also highlighted that this funding adds to its recent collaboration with the Japan National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology regarding AI and quantum technology. This partnership reiterates that partnerships between companies and universities are a key tool to address the shortage of skilled AI personnel.

In her statement, President Nagata Kyosuke of the University of Tsukuba emphasized that this new partnership will strengthen existing research in the semiconductor industry in both countries, opening up new opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Amazon stressed that the partnership will last ten years and expands on their long-standing close collaboration with Nvidia which has lasted 13 years.

President Tricia Serio from the University of Washington highlighted that this institution has obtained an extraordinary opportunity to lead global conversations on AI and convene academic researchers, industry experts, and government leaders. She emphasized that this collaboration is essential for advancing AI research and development.
