Volkswagen, the renowned German automobile company, is commemorating the 50th anniversary of their iconic Golf model on Friday. Over the past 50 years, more than 37 million units of this car have been sold worldwide. On average, an astonishing 2,000 people choose a new Golf every day.

The production of the Golf began on March 29, 1974 as a replacement for the Beetle. It is still manufactured in Wolfsburg, the historical headquarters of Volkswagen, as well as in other production sites in Germany and seven other countries. In order to mark this significant milestone, a special exhibition will be held in Wolfsburg to showcase the last five decades of the Golf’s existence.

Throughout its half-century history, eight generations of the Golf have been introduced. The most recent model is the Golf 8 that was presented in 2019. This new version is available as a plug-in hybrid with a fully electric range of up to 100 kilometers. Additionally, it features voice control and an artificial intelligence-based conversation partner.

In terms of sales figures, the Golf was the best-selling Volkswagen model in Germany in 2023 with over 81,000 cars sold according to Statista. Furthermore, nearly one-fifth of all cars registered in Germany last year were Golfs according to Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA).
