In a thrilling competition held on Saturday, April 20, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, New Trier High School emerged victorious and secured the title of science Olympiad state champions. This win marks their return to the national finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing, a feat last achieved in 2018.
Science Olympiad tournaments bring together teams of 15 students who compete in 23 different events that test their knowledge and skills across various scientific disciplines. The team with the lowest overall score is declared the winner. During the state championships, New Trier competed against 24 other teams, securing first place in eight events and second place in five others. With a total team score of 84 points, they outperformed Stevenson by just two points to claim the top spot.
Individually, several students from New Trier shone brightly at the competition. Junior Malachi Noel led the way by contributing to four first-place teams, followed closely by Vivian Chen with three first-place events. Other standout performers included Prashu Rao, Tiana Wu, Kevin Huang, Varun Murali, and Stephen Zhao, each contributing to two first-place finishes.
New Trier’s journey to becoming state champions began with a commanding performance at the regional tournament held on March 9 at Oakton College. They won an astounding 18 out of 23 events and secured a first-place team finish. This victory propelled them forward to the state level of competition where they continued their impressive run and clinched another championship title.
