The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has recently announced a new policy regarding transgender athletes participating in athletics. This policy, which was adopted by the NAIA Council of Presidents, outlines the conditions under which student-athletes can participate in NAIA competition.

Under this policy, for sports designated as male by the NAIA, all eligible student-athletes are allowed to participate. However, for sports designated as female, only student-athletes whose biological sex is female can participate. The policy specifies conditions for female student-athletes who have or have not begun masculinizing hormone therapy.

The new policy will apply to all sports except for cheer and dance. Institutions with student-athletes who have begun masculinizing hormone therapy must notify the NAIA national office. The policy is set to go into effect on August 1, 2024. This policy aims to provide clarity and guidance for transgender athletes and member institutions within the NAIA.
