Gov. Andy Beshear recently signed a bill in Frankfort, Kentucky, that provides a framework for residents interested in participating in the rapidly expanding medical cannabis industry. The new plan allows qualifying businesses to begin the application process six months earlier than previously planned, with the first round of licensing taking place in October through a lottery system.

The bill has faced criticism from some professionals, like Matthew Bratcher from Kentucky NORML, who have raised concerns about subjecting patients to criminal background checks before entering the cannabis registry. However, Gov. Beshear has assured that safety remains the top priority within the growing medical cannabis sector.

As the industry continues to evolve, Gov. Beshear emphasized the need for careful enforcement to maintain a safe environment for all involved. More information about the program can be accessed on the Team Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program website. With this bill in place, Kentucky residents now have a structured pathway to participate in the promising medical cannabis industry.
