The King Milling Company, the oldest continuously operating business in Kent County, has recently completed a $47 million expansion project. The company invited FOX 17 News to tour its new six-floor, monolithic concrete flour mill in Lowell. The construction on the new mill began in the summer of 2022 and was finished during the winter.

The building is fully insulated, uses LED lighting, premium-efficient motors, and a heat recovery system to reduce fossil fuel use in colder temperatures. The event marking the completion of the expansion project included speeches from King Milling Chairman and CEO Brian Doyle, President Jim Doyle, MDARD Economic and Community Development Specialist Jodi Gruner, Lowell City Manager Mike Burns, and others.

The new mill is considered the country’s most modern and is the result of a $47 million investment in West Michigan. The project received a 12-year, 50% tax abatement from the city of Lowell and a $250,000 grant from the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Food and Agriculture Investment Program.

Brian Doyle expressed gratitude for the community support that King Milling has received throughout its history. The company has been family-owned and operated since 1890, milling different types of wheat to produce high-quality flours for bakers and food processors across Michigan and beyond. King Milling is one of only six flour mills remaining in Michigan that are dedicated to serving their communities with quality products.
