New England Patriots punter Bryce Baringer is set to compete for a championship in golf before heading to training camp on July 23. Baringer recently shot 1-under 69 at Stockbridge Golf Club, earning medalist honors and qualifying for the Massachusetts State Amateur. Despite not qualifying in the past back in his home state of Michigan, Baringer decided to give it another shot and was successful this time around. He saw this as an opportunity to stay competitive during the break and had the full support of everyone around him.
As a rookie from Michigan State, Baringer led the NFL in punts downed inside the 20-yard line, showcasing his talent in both football and golf. His interest in golf was sparked by his father, Bruce, who had to forego his own college golf dreams to take care of his sick father. Baringer also played high-school golf at Notre Dame Prep. On Father’s Day, Baringer surprised his dad by flying to Michigan to compete in a tournament with him, making him proud both on and off the football field.
The Massachusetts Amateur will provide Baringer with a chance to showcase his skills in a different arena before heading to training camp with the Patriots. Notable past champions of the competition include Ryan Downes, Michael Thorbjornsen, Matt Parziale, Rob Oppenheim, and Francis Ouimet, among others. This competition will be a great opportunity for Baringer to prove himself as a versatile athlete and gain valuable experience that he can bring back with him when he returns from summer break ready for training camp with the Patriots.
