In recent news, two unusual substances have been discovered in red yeast rice products (beni koji) by the Japanese Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Medical Sciences. However, no specific information about the ingredients or side effects of these substances has been provided. The analysis of samples from Kobayashi, a popular producer of beni koji, revealed the presence of these compounds, which are not commonly found in functional foods.

Prior to this discovery, Kobayashi had identified puberulic acid, a natural compound derived from green mold, in their production process. This substance has antibacterial and antimalarial properties but can also cause toxicity in users. The health issues associated with using Kobayashi’s red yeast rice products have resulted in 240 hospitalizations and 5 deaths in Japan, with many more individuals seeking medical attention. Symptoms reported by patients include malaise, loss of appetite, abnormal urine, and kidney disorders.

On April 11, Taiwanese health authorities also reported 40 cases of health problems linked to the use of red yeast rice products. Common symptoms observed in patients included impaired kidney function, hematuria (blood in urine), and back pain. The investigation into these products and their potential health risks is ongoing, with authorities eager to understand the causes of these issues and take appropriate action to protect consumers.
