Carlos Adames has been appointed as the new champion of the middleweight division by the World Boxing Council (WBC) following Jermall Charlo’s arrest for suspected drunken driving in Texas. Charlo, an unbeaten boxer, had not defended his title since 2021 and had become the interim champion in October 2022.

In November 2022, Adames became the interim champion after Charlo failed to defend his title. The WBC Board of Governors made this decision after evaluating the facts and circumstances surrounding Charlo’s legal troubles. According to a police report, Charlo was arrested in the Houston suburb of Pearland on three misdemeanor charges after his blood-alcohol content was found to be over twice the legal limit. Charlo struck another vehicle and fled from the police during the incident.

The WBC stated that they would continue to support Jermall Charlo during his challenging times, particularly regarding his mental wellness. After considering all relevant information, the organization may rank Charlo in the super middleweight division in the future.

Charlo’s most recent fight was a non-title bout in November where he achieved a unanimous-decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. With a record of 33-0 and 22 knockouts, Charlo’s boxing career has faced a setback due to his legal troubles.
