Microsoft and OpenAI are planning to construct a massive data center called Stargate, which will be the largest of a series of data centers they have designed together. Unlike previous data centers that relied on Nvidia graphics cards, Stargate will be built to be independent of a single chip manufacturer in its architecture. When connected together, the components of Stargate could form a “supercomputer” with up to a million processors, aligning with the goal of the ethernet consortium founded by Microsoft.

The investment in Stargate is expected to far surpass what Microsoft spent on servers and equipment for its data centers in 2023 alone and would be about a hundred times more expensive than a standard data center. This move signifies a significant shift in strategy for OpenAI and Microsoft as they aim to boost their computing power and move away from reliance on Nvidia.

Recently, The Information reported on OpenAI and Microsoft’s plans for building Stargate. While some unrelated content was provided at the end, it is not clear how this content relates to the discussion about Stargate.
