Mexico has announced that it will take Ecuador to the International Court of Justice to denounce the country’s violations of International Law. This action comes after the police assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito for the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, made the announcement in a press conference and stated that Mexico will also go to multilateral organizations to condemn Ecuador’s actions that led to the breaking of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Mexico has received solidarity from at least 18 Latin American countries, 10 European countries, the United States, Canada, and various international organizations and parliamentarians. The Mexican government is taking firm actions to denounce Ecuador’s violations of International Law and protect its diplomatic staff and citizens abroad.

The Mexican diplomats in Ecuador returned home with support from other embassies and the Mexican Air Force. The diplomats returned home with their heads held high, proud to represent Mexico abroad. The Mexican government also provided assistance to Mexican citizens in Ecuador through the Registration System for Mexican Persons Abroad and embassies in nearby countries.
