The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is seeing a fierce competition between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk for the top spot. While Meta CEO Zuckerberg has surpassed Tesla CEO Musk to become the third richest person in the world, this is not the first time that Zuckerberg has been in the top three. With a reported net worth of $187 billion, he has overtaken Musk who now holds fourth place with a fortune of $181 billion.

Tesla’s shares have slumped by over 34% since the beginning of the year, leading to their first year-over-year sales drop in almost four years. This news saw Tesla’s shares fall by over 7%, contributing significantly to Musk’s decline in the rankings. Despite this setback, Musk still holds a significant amount of wealth with an additional $30 billion to his name.

Zuckerberg is quickly approaching Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ level of wealth with a net worth of $207 billion, placing Bezos in second place on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault currently holds the top spot with a net worth of $223 billion.

The rivalry between Zuckerberg and Musk goes beyond their net worth and dates back to 2016 when a SpaceX explosion destroyed a Facebook satellite. Sparks continued to fly between them last year when Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage fight, and Meta’s launch of Threads, a competing social media platform to X, further fueled their tension as tech executives.
